Kala Idiom

인다 더리 거 아노 냐 움버
inta teli ke ano nya uampe
/ɪːⁿta tɛːli kɛ aːno ɲa waːᵐpe/
even donkey O repeat for perfect
Repetition can teach even a donkey. = التكرار يعلّم الحمار. (it-tikraar yi3allim il-humaar) = Practice makes perfect.

Over the next few weeks I plan on exploring idioms on this page and how to express them (or, how I would) in Kala.

  1. Not sure I understand the syntax of this sentence. “Repeat” is the object, and “donkey” is the subject, but what is “for” doing?

    • Well, “nya” is actually (for [benefactive; BEN]; purpose of; by), so in this sentence it should have been glossed “purpose of” as that is closer to the meaning being relayed. So, “Even the donkey, for the purpose of perfection, repeats (repetition).”
