This word is a priori and was formed from peya (piece, part) and ma’o (four) similar to Middle Persian ctlng ‎(čatrang, “chess”), from Sanskrit चतुरङ्ग ‎(cátur-aṅga, “four parts” of an army: king, elephants, horses, foot soldiers”).
