Polar vs Content

Kala distinguishes polar and content questions very simply by placing a content word at the beginning of the question.

ta ke kala pako onyo ka
2sg O languages new learn Q
Are you learning a new language?

ula ta ke kala onyo ka
INDEF 2sg O language learn Q
What language are you learning?

  1. What does Kala do with two content question words, like “what did you buy when?” In some Slavic languages, both wh-words move to the front of the sentence.

  2. I would need more context to translate “what did you buy when?”…it seems like a fairly context-dependent clause.
